A Beginner's Two Bits

I have read a bunch of articles on HubPages about the Adsense program, and up until now I thought I had nothing to contribute to the discussion. But something changed today!
Like most of you, I suspect, I go to the Adsense site where my articles are listed along with page views, etc, and I try to see a pattern to the statistics. One thing I have learned is that if you have a popular article, you will find out fast on Adsense. So that tells you that perhaps you could write more articles on the same subject and they would do as well. But if you are a writer like me, sometimes your muse does not respond to that. There are some subjects I think I am plumb out of ideas for. Nevertheless, it is good information provided.
I'll discuss what happened today while I point out a few tidbits for those of you just starting your journey down trying to become a financially rewarded author. I hope they do not seem too trivial.
In this business, you have to experiment. If you are signed up with Google Analytics (it's free by the way), you get a lot more information about page views, the nature of your traffic, etc which could help you if you have a web-site of your own. If you belong to HubPages (are registered), get your code at Google Analytics, and go to your "my account ". Next, on the "my account" page you click on the "affiliate setting". Click edit, paste your Analytics code which starts with UA-"numbers", and that's it, you are done. Google Analytics will track your article statistics. There is nothing like writing to the traffic.
Two More Bits
As of yet, I haven't discovered a topic that I might be a good blogger on. I have a blogspot.com blog that doesn't do well in the making money department, but does get a few views. And until I get a better idea for blogging I will stick with it, because I can link back to my HubPage articles, and as I hope you know (because everybody repeats this), back linking is your bread and butter. In other words, start a blog, if at all possible.
Another thing I have discovered (for me that is) is that advertisements on my HubPages articles tend to get more clicks if I keep then related to the article. You really have two choices about advertising when you start an account on Google Adsense. You can select the following: "Interest-based ads: Show (or do not show) ads based on user interest and demographic categories. Visitation information from my sites may be used to help create interest and demographic categories", or "Third Party Ads: Do not allow (or allow) advertisers to use their audience information to deliver more relevant ads to my site." To make the choice, do the following: go to Google Adsense via "affiliate settings" (in "my account" click on "affiliate settings" at the top of the page), click on "check your Google Earnings, and then once there click on "my account" (in Google Adsense). The seventh item down is your Interest-based Ad Preference. The eighth item down is Third Party ads. Click on edit and choose your selections for both.
So, if third party advertisers discover that a beautiful chick in a tight tank top gets a lot of clicks when positioned on an article about acne, that might get placed on your article page. The relationship is that the third-party advertisers know that that interests people seeking advice on acne. But here is my two cents worth. I have found that not using audience information to deliver more relevant ads to my site works better for me. I am sure that it works better for some people, but not so far for me. I like interest-based ads based on the article subject, with information gathered from my readers' visitations. Just sayin'. This shows what I have learned from Adsense Report Overview. You need to pay attention to the stats at Adsense and you may discover an important relationship for you.
In the same vein, you have a great deal of information available in your account listed at the top at http://hubpages.com/ under "account" top right side. You can also get statistics if you click on "my profile " and click stats. A great graphic appears showing the pattern during the day of your page views.
OK. Now for today's discovery. Remember, I am an amateur too. What I found out today is that to be successful in writing for money, you need to be self-motivating. I learned this by observing that even with a small amount of money earned, I get psyched. Today I earned $0.14! Ha, you say. So what! Well, for some reason, if I make anything in a day, I get happy. And so today I tried to psychoanalyze myself. It must be because that whole $0.14 came from my work!! I worked for this and I worked for that, I linked here, and I linked there, I book-marked here and I book-marked there, I wrote a new hub, I published an article on another site and back linked; these are all routine things that you learn to do quickly (maybe not writing a hub!). And the result of that work was $0.14. What can you buy for $0.14? Not much if anything, but that doesn't seem to bother me - it gets me a little obsessive; I get happy and want to do more. I was going to say it was like an aphrodisiac, but that seemed a bit over the top!
Now if that doesn't happen to you automatically, maybe you can psyche yourself into getting a kick out of making a wee bit of money. Instead of thinking it is "JUST" $0.14, perhaps you could think of it as the beginning of more to come. Perhaps you could tell yourself that creating a paying business is hard work (just ask anyone who has tried to create a brick-and-mortar business!) and that by getting your $0.14 you have proved that your work is worthwhile to someone and a new beginning. Hey, before you made $0!! When I think this way, I'm ready to write another hub (I am not a fast writer). I am ready to invest good time into publishing again. Just as athletes image before an event (walk through what they will be doing) you can image too. Get those positive thoughts about YOUR BUSINESS rumbling through your head. I think it will work for a lot of you.
Now it's confession time. My work on HubPages has extended over 7 months, and during that time I have earned $39.63. That's $5.66 a month, which is about $0.19 a day. That is a lot better than when I was making $0.01 a day! The money you earn from Adsense is because of you and your work, and the way Google Adsense works. Trust me, I have read a lot about earning from advertisements, and so far, everything has pointed to Google Adsense as the premier program. There are others, but this is a great place to start.
That's my $0.02 for today. I wish you luck with your writing and hope you can look at your pecuniary success as important, even if it is $0.14!!
